Anyone you ask in this community of artists and storytellers can confirm that it does, in fact, take a village to bring a film to life. One of the essential pieces to fully realize a director’s vision is the film’s score, but, as any composer can tell you, that’s a hard needle to thread.
During this year’s Festival, ASCAP sat down with the dynamic composing team behind the sonic fingerprint of Cha Cha Real Smooth: Este Haim and Christopher Stracey. While both might be best known for their other projects — Este being one third of the rock band HAIM and Stracey being a solo artist in addition to being one half of Bag Raiders — their scoring collaborations are quickly becoming a major part of their lives.
Below watch an interview with the pair as they discuss their work on Netflix’s Maid, connecting with director Cooper Raiff on Cha Cha, and how they like to creatively throw spaghetti on the wall. Major shout out to Tobias Jesso Jr. for introducing the pair in the first place.
