After weeks of preparation, speculation, and anticipation, we’re thrilled to unveil the full program of the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Next month, all eyes will be on independents as we gather in Utah and online to support the brightest and most innovative filmmakers and artists.
Today, we announced the 64 short films and four Indie Episodic works that will complete the 2023 Sundance Film Festival program. Mike Plante — Senior Programmer, Short Film — provided some great insight to this year’s selection: “Sundance Institute has a long-standing commitment to supporting short independent storytelling and as we continue that commitment, we’re fortunate to have an extraordinary slate of shorts to screen at the Festival. The shorts we selected are all revelations in their own right of: exciting new voices, humorous or moving perspectives, stylistic innovation, and more. The 2023 lineup is thematically varied and consistently interesting — no matter which of the nine programs audiences check out, they’ll be entertained and surprised by what they find.”
These premieres join the previously announced 99 feature length films that will be premiering and screening throughout the 11 categories (U.S. Dramatic Competition, U.S. Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, World Cinema Documentary Competition, Premieres, Spotlight, NEXT, Midnight, New Frontier, Kids, From the Collection).
While the artists and subject matter of each film varies, Kim Yutani — Sundance Film Festival’s Director of Programming — sees the common themes of community and urgency flowing throughout the 2023 slate: “The program for this year’s Festival reiterates the relevancy of trailblazing work serving as an irreplaceable source for original stories that resonate and fuel creativity and dialogue. In so many ways this year’s slate reflects the voices of communities around the world who are speaking out with urgency and finally being heard. Across our program, impactful storytelling by fearless artists continues to provide space for the community to come together to be entertained, challenged, and inspired.”
