As you try to keep cool in the summer heat, our Sundance Institute trivia game continues to sizzle! As a follow-up to our June game, we’re once again shining a light on new releases and revisiting some past gems. A new twist in our continued effort to highlight Sundance-supported artists and projects, see if you have the film smarts to guess the names of the people and films in this round!

Name this Sundance Institute alum director ready to take the summer box office by storm(s):

His feature film Minari, which depicts a Korean American boy moving with his family from the West Coast to rural Arkansas in the 1980s, premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
Minari received both the U.S. Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic and the Audience Award: U.S. Dramatic at the 2020 Festival and went on to be nominated for six Academy Awards.

Identify the film about an epic six-week music festival in the summer of 1969:

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson made his directorial debut with the world premiere of this film during the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. In 2023 the film returned for a special screening at the Festival and Questlove served as a panelist on the Onyx Collective’s Storytellers Showcase panel there.

The film won both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize for U.S. Documentary at the Festival and went on to win the Academy Award for Best Documentary.
Questlove shared that the first cut of the film was three hours and 20 minutes long when discussing how critical the editing process was in the making of the documentary.

Who is this multi-Sundance Film Festival alum actor who’s starring in a dark thriller releasing this summer:

This actor worked alongside Kirsten Dunst in The Virgin Suicides, directed by Sofia Coppola, which screened at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. This marked his first appearance on the mountain.
He starred with Lucy Liu in Lucky Number Slevin, a neo-noir crime thriller, which screened at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.

He took on a producer role, in addition to acting, for the film August, directed by Austin Chick, which premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival. August also featured Adam Scott, another Sundance Festival mainstay.
