Are you ready for a new year? While we’re eagerly awaiting January for obvious reasons — have we mentioned that the 2025 Sundance Film Festival is taking place in person and online from January 23–February 2? — we also want to take a moment to think back on 2024 and commemorate the artistic journeys of the independent storytellers whose projects Sundance Institute has supported, either as selections for the Festival or through the Institute’s artist programs

At the beginning of every month, we bring you a roundup of all the Sundance-supported projects slated to reach wider audiences, whether in theaters, on streaming services, or via TV broadcast. This year, those titles included five episodic series and 81 films that screened at the Sundance Film Festival between 2022 and 2024, 13 projects that did not screen at the Festival but were supported by the Institute’s artist programs, and one 4K theatrical rerelease from 1999. That adds up to a thrilling 100 releases — 52 fiction and 48 nonfiction titles — and we couldn’t be happier to see these talented storytellers and their teams reach new heights.

The year started off on a roll, featuring titles from both 2023 and the new Festival in 2024, and the number of new releases held steady each month until summer, when moviegoers became spoiled for choice with dozens of Sundance-supported projects to include on their watchlists. That trend continued throughout autumn (October featured a whopping 17 Sundance-supported releases!), and by December we were thrilled to cap off 2024’s list at 100 titles. And we can’t wait to do it all over again — in fact, be on the lookout for the first Release Rundown blog of 2025 later this week.

So, whether you’re reminiscing, brushing up before awards season (12 of the 15 feature-length documentaries on the Academy Awards 2025 shortlist were Sundance-supported!), or looking to find a new favorite whose release you may have missed, we invite you to look back at 2024 through the lens of independent film. Read on to find links to each month’s Release Rundown blog from 2024.
