Tonight: Free Surprise Screening of Wes Anderson’s First and Newest Short Films

It’s not over until it’s over! As part of our 40th Edition Celebration programming, we are thrilled to announce a special screening tonight of two short films by one of the most iconic directors working today, Wes Anderson. Hosted by Netflix, this free event will screen Anderson’s debut short film Bottle Rocket (originally from the 1993 Sundance Film Festival) along with a bonus screening of his Oscar-nominated 2023 short The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

Bottle Rocket, which Anderson made with Owen and Luke Wilson for $7,000 right out of college, premiered at the ’93 Festival and was the basis of his debut feature film of the same name that was supported by Sundance Institute’s Screenwriters lab. While he’s gone on to make several iconic features, Anderson has never strayed too far from his short film roots and now is nominated for an Academy Award for his latest, 31 years after his Sundance Film Festival debut.

This event is open to the general public on a first come, first served basis. There is no pre-registration or ticketing for this screening. Seats will fill up quickly, so make sure to arrive at least 45 minutes early. Read all the details about the screening below.

Bottle Rocket Short Film

Wes Anderson’s Bottle Rocket short film stars brothers Owen and Luke Wilson — who plan and carry out a small-scale home burglary. The film played at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival. It was there that the Sundance Institute supported Anderson with their Screenwriters Lab as he turned the short into a feature length film.

This short film will not be presented with captions or audio description.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is Wes Anderson’s most recent short film, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film. The short film is a beloved Roald Dahl story about a rich man who learns about a guru who can see without using his eyes and then sets out to master the skill in order to cheat at gambling.

This short film will have closed captions and audio description available upon request.
